You wear absolutely nothing under cycling bib shorts or padded cycling shorts. No underwear, no briefs, no boxers, no thongs, and no running liners. The built-in padded insert—called a chamois—is designed, shaped, and treated to sit directly against your bare skin.

For nearly every beginner, this rule feels counterintuitive because every other sport encourages a baseline layer of underwear. But on a road bicycle, introducing a layer of fabric between your body and the chamois is the fastest route to excruciating chafing, raw blistered skin, and infected saddle sores.

1. No restrictive waistband around your stomach

When riding a road bike, your torso is bent forward at an angle (the “hinge” position). An elastic waistband cuts directly into your lower abdomen and diaphragm, restricting deep belly breathing and creating uncomfortable pressure while riding in the drops. Bib shorts have no waistband at all; they suspend smoothly from your shoulders.

2. Total pad stability with zero slipping

Every time you stand up to climb, shift back on the saddle, or drop into an aerodynamic tuck, a standard waist short tends to creep downward. Once the waistband slips even an inch, the chamois pad sags and migrates away from your sit bones. The next time you sit down, you sit on a folded or misaligned pad, causing immediate chafing. 3. Gap-free lower back coverage

Do beginners need chamois cream on every ride?

Not necessarily. For short rides under 45 to 60 minutes in cool or moderate weather, high-quality, properly fitting bib shorts worn against clean skin are usually sufficient on their own.

However, chamois cream becomes invaluable when:

  • You are embarking on rides longer than 60 to 90 minutes.
  • You are riding in hot, humid weather where excessive sweat increases skin friction.
  • You are riding in wet or rainy conditions where road grit and moisture find their way into the fabric.
  • You are prone to sensitive skin, ingrown hairs, or friction chafing along the inner groin crease.

  4. Avoid broken skin: If you already have an open raw sore or broken skin, avoid applying heavily scented or mentholated chamois creams directly into the wound; use a simple medical antiseptic ointment and rest off the bike instead.

The non-negotiable hygiene and washing rules

Because a cycling chamois sits against intimate, sweat-prone areas under repeated friction, following strict hygiene protocols is essential to prevent bacterial infections and painful skin complications.

1. Get out of your bib shorts immediately after the ride

The moment you stop riding, your body temperature cools, but the chamois remains a warm, humid, sweat-soaked sponge. Sitting around in damp cycling shorts at a post-ride coffee shop or during the drive home is the single most common cause of folliculitis (bacterial infection of hair follicles, usually caused by Staphylococcus bacteria) and fungal rashes.   • Use a mild, liquid sports detergent: Avoid heavy powdered detergents that can leave irritating residue embedded in the pad.
  • NEVER use fabric softener: Fabric softeners coat synthetic fibres with a hydrophobic chemical wax film that completely destroys the fabric’s breathability and wicking capability.
  • Line dry / hang dry only: Never place cycling bib shorts in a tumble dryer. Tumble dryer heat destroys the foam cells inside the chamois and warps elastic leg grippers. Hang them by the straps or lay them flat in a well-ventilated space.
