First-ride checklist

Do the checks; do not turn the first ride into an equipment exam. If a safety-critical part is loose, damaged, or confusing, pause and ask a bike shop or experienced mechanic.

Bike — 2 minutes

  • Tyres look undamaged and have sensible pressure
  • Front and rear brakes stop their wheels
  • Wheels are secure and spin normally
  • Chain moves smoothly and is not dry or rusty
  • Saddle and handlebar do not twist
  • Front and rear lights work if visibility may be poor

Route — 1 minute

  • The first ride is deliberately short
  • I know the busiest junctions and can avoid them
  • I have a safe turnaround or shortcut home
  • Someone knows my route if I am riding alone

Pocket and bottle — 1 minute

  • Water
  • Charged phone and identification
  • Payment method or transit/rescue option
  • Spare tube or patch kit, tyre levers, and pump if I know how to use them
  • Any personal medication I may need

Rider — 1 minute

  • Helmet sits level and straps are secure
  • Clothing cannot catch in the chain or wheels
  • I can reach both brake levers comfortably
  • I feel well enough to ride and conditions match my ability

The go / no-go rule

Go when the bike passes its safety checks, the route suits the conditions, and you feel comfortable. Do not go when braking, steering, wheels, tyres, visibility, illness, or severe weather creates a doubt you cannot resolve.

Send the checklist directly to a beginner, local club chat, bike-shop helper, or new-rider thread without asking them to read a long guide first.

Use SIKLIST's first-ride checklist before a beginner road ride: bike safety, route, water, phone, repair kit, and a realistic way home.
