Used road bike checklist
A cheap used bike is only cheap if the frame is sound, the size works, the parts are serviceable, and the first repair bill does not erase the saving.
Walk away immediately
- No credible proof of ownership, removed serial number, or pressure to pay fast
- Cracked carbon, dented aluminium, bent fork, or crash damage near the front end
- Seized seatpost, slipping gears under load, unsafe brakes, or wheels that will not stay centered
- A size or position that prevents calm braking and steering
- A low price that disappears once tyres, chain, cassette, pads, cables, service, and fit changes are counted
Before you travel
Ask the seller first
If the answers are vague, rushed, or hostile, that is useful information. Do not let a bargain pull you into a bad viewing.
- What exact model, year, and size is the bike?
- Do you have the original receipt, serial number, or proof of ownership?
- Has the frame, fork, handlebar, or wheelset ever been crashed or replaced?
- When were the chain, cassette, tyres, brake pads, and cables or hydraulic service last done?
- Are there any creaks, shifting problems, brake rub, slipping gears, or slow punctures?
- What pedals, chargers, adapters, manuals, spare hangers, or small parts are included?
Identity and fit
- Serial number is present and ownership story feels consistent
- Frame size matches the listing and gives normal saddle adjustment room
- You can reach both brake levers without locking elbows or stretching
- Saddle and seatpost move and are not seized in the frame
Frame and fork
- No cracks, dents, ripples, soft spots, or suspicious paint breaks
- Fork, head tube, down tube, and bottom bracket area look straight and undamaged
- Wheels sit centered in the frame and fork
- No fresh paint, stickers, or tape hiding likely damage points
Drivetrain
- Chain is not rusty, dry, kinked, or visibly stretched
- Cassette teeth are not hooked into shark-fin shapes
- Bike shifts across usable gears while pedalling lightly
- Cranks spin smoothly without knocking, grinding, or side play
Wheels and tyres
- Rims are not cracked, heavily worn, dented, or wobbling badly
- Spokes are present, similarly tensioned, and not loose by hand
- Tyres are not cracked, squared-off, bulging, or cut through the casing
- Valve type and tyre size are noted for tubes, pump, and spares
Brakes and controls
- Both brakes stop their wheels before the lever reaches the bar
- Pads have usable material and contact the rim or rotor cleanly
- Rotors or rims are not badly scored, oily, or rubbing constantly
- Handlebar, stem, levers, and headset feel secure when gently loaded
Test ride
- Only ride if steering, tyres, wheels, and brakes pass the static check
- Start, stop, turn, and shift at low speed in a quiet place
- Listen for repeatable creaks, grinding, skipping, brake scraping, or wheel rub
- Stop immediately if braking, steering, or control feels uncertain
