Starter gear checklist
Buy the items that keep the first rides legal, visible, hydrated, and recoverable. Leave performance upgrades until a real ride proves they solve a problem.
Safety and visibility
- Certified helmet that sits level and does not rock when fastened
- White front light and red rear light with enough charge for the whole ride
- Required reflectors fitted and not hidden by bags or clothing
- Clothing and shoes that cannot catch in the chain, pedals, or wheels
Drink and fallback
- Water bottle or pack you can use safely
- Charged phone, identification, and emergency contact
- Payment method, transit option, pickup plan, or walkable route exit
- Any personal medication or weather layer the route makes sensible
Repair compatibility
- Tyre size copied from the tyre sidewall
- Valve type confirmed: Presta or Schrader
- Spare tube or patch method that matches the wheel and tyre
- Pump that fits the valve and can reach usable pressure
- Two tyre levers and a small tool that matches your bike fasteners
Can wait
- Cycling jersey, unless pocket access or fabric fit solves a real problem
- Padded shorts, unless saddle pressure or seams are limiting rides
- Clipless pedals and shoes, until normal stopping and starting feel calm
- Bike computer, until navigation or phone battery becomes a real constraint
- CO2 inflator, until you have already practised with a pump and tube
