What to do when a road-tubeless puncture will not seal
Handle a leaking road-tubeless tyre safely: stop the air loss, decide whether sealant, a compatible plug, or a spare tube is appropriate, and inspect it at home.

When a road-tubeless puncture sprays sealant or reopens as pressure rises, move off the road and stop chasing full pressure. Put the hole at the bottom so sealant reaches it, let the system stabilise, and decide whether the tyre can safely continue at a lower permitted pressure or needs a model-approved plug or spare tube.
The short answer: sealant handles small tread punctures, not every cut. If the leak will not stabilise, the casing or bead is damaged, or the remaining pressure is unsafe, stop riding. Follow the tyre and rim makers’ repair rules. Carry a tube even with tubeless, and inspect the inside before treating a roadside seal as permanent.
Why a sealed hole can reopen at road pressure
Road riders repeatedly report small punctures that seal only until the tyre is reinflated and debate whether road tubeless is worthwhile when sealant does not hold higher pressure. The useful signal is a predictable limitation: a larger hole and higher pressure can challenge a liquid seal.
Sealant must be liquid, compatible, present in the maker’s quantity, and physically reach the hole. The puncture must also be within the product’s capability. Schwalbe says its sealant is not suitable for large cuts or bursts and recommends a replacement tube for serious damage. Continental goes further for its systems: if sealant does not reliably seal tyre damage, it recommends changing the tyre rather than a DIY repair. Your tyre’s instructions decide the path.
First, get yourself out of danger
- Hold a predictable line and slow gently; a rapidly softening tyre changes handling.
- Stop completely away from traffic, descents, and unstable ground.
- Keep eyes and hands clear of spraying sealant.
- Find the leak without putting fingers against a rotating tyre.
- Check whether the bead remains seated and whether the rim has struck the road.
Do not continue simply because some pressure remains. A soft front tyre can roll or unseat in a corner; a soft rear can damage the casing and rim.
Give active sealant one controlled chance
If the damage is a small tread puncture, the bead and rim look normal, and the tyre maker permits continued use:
- Rotate the hole to the bottom so liquid covers it.
- Hold it there briefly, then gently rotate or rock the wheel.
- Allow the pressure to fall rather than repeatedly pumping the hole open.
- Inflate only to a safe pressure within every stated limit.
- Watch and listen for renewed leaking before moving.
Some makers advise rolling or riding gently to flex and distribute sealant; do that only if the tyre already holds safe pressure and the surroundings allow it. Never use a descent as the test.
If no liquid appears, the sealant may be dry, insufficient, or trapped elsewhere—but injecting an unknown quantity at the roadside is not automatically safe. Follow the exact sealant interval, quantity, and mixing rules. Do not combine products unless both manufacturers approve it.
Decide between a plug and a tube
A compatible tubeless plug
A plug may close a tread hole that is beyond liquid sealant, but tyre manufacturers disagree about whether plugs are permitted and whether they count as temporary. Use one only when the tyre and rim documentation allows it, the tool matches the system, and the damage is in an eligible area.
Do not plug a sidewall, bead, large cut, exposed casing, or damaged rim. Do not force a tool so deeply that it damages rim tape. After fitting, inflate conservatively and recheck before a slow bailout ride.
A spare inner tube
A tube is the broadest roadside fallback for a tyre whose bead and casing remain structurally usable. Before installing it:
- remove the tubeless valve as its maker directs;
- find and remove the puncturing object;
- wipe away enough sealant to handle the parts;
- inspect the entire inside for sharp edges, cuts, damaged tape, or exposed spoke holes;
- boot only a minor eligible tread cut with a purpose-made tyre boot;
- install the correct tube without trapping it under the bead.
A tube cannot make a large cut, torn bead, cracked rim, or seriously damaged casing safe. Arrange collection when the structure is uncertain.
Carry a road-tubeless bailout kit
- a correctly sized spare tube with enough valve length for the rim;
- a reliable mini-pump rather than only one inflation attempt;
- suitable tyre levers;
- valve-core and valve-removal tools if your setup requires them;
- a purpose-made tyre boot;
- a permitted plug kit if your tyre maker allows one;
- gloves or a small cloth for sealant;
- phone, payment method, and a pickup plan.
Test at home that you can remove the tubeless valve and fit the tube. Deep rims, tight beads, valve extenders, and inserts can make a theoretically correct spare useless. The starter gear checklist is a good place to record the exact sizes.
Inspect the tyre after every significant puncture
A roadside seal is not proof of undamaged casing. At home, follow the maker’s deflation and removal procedure, then inspect the tread, sidewalls, bead, inner casing, rim tape, valve, and rim. Look for cut cords, a bulge, delamination, bead damage, and marks from riding soft.
Ask the tyre manufacturer whether the specific damage and roadside method are eligible for continued use. Record sealant brand, installation date, quantity, tyre size, pressure when the puncture occurred, and the repair used. Replace any component the manufacturer cannot clear.
Prevent the same failure next ride
- Check that tyre, rim, tape, valve, and sealant are mutually compatible.
- Inspect liquid sealant at the maker’s interval; heat can shorten service life.
- Use the specified quantity rather than guessing from sound.
- Set pressure for total load, tyre size, rim, surface, and every component limit.
- Replace tyres with cuts, exposed casing, damaged beads, or repeated repair problems.
- Practise the tube fallback before a remote ride.
Do not respond by inflating to the sidewall maximum. Maximum tyre pressure is a limit, not a target.
