Is the wobble in your bicycle wheel, tyre, or wheel balance?
Diagnose a spinning-wheel wobble by separating stand movement, tyre seating, rim trueness, spoke faults, hub play, and harmless static imbalance.

A bike that shakes while its unloaded wheel spins does not automatically have an out-of-true rim. First hold the frame or stand still and watch three separate references: the rim edge, the tyre’s moulded seating line, and the tyre tread. They can move differently.
The short answer: if the stand moves but the rim and tyre run consistently, ordinary weight imbalance may be the cause. If the rim moves side to side, inspect trueness and spokes. If the rim is steady but the tyre line rises, falls, or snakes, stop and correct tyre seating or casing damage before riding.
Why the video can look worse than the wheel
A highly discussed r/bikewrench post showed a new wheel making a repair stand shake. Another asked whether a wheel was true when only the tyre was visible. Together they expose a common diagnostic mistake: treating movement of the bike, rim, tyre, and tread as one thing.
A valve, reflector, magnet, tube overlap, sealant distribution, or rim joint can make an unloaded rotating assembly slightly unbalanced. On a light stand, that rotating mass can shake the whole bike. Trueness is different: it describes how the rim tracks laterally and radially around the hub.
Run the three-reference test
Secure the bike so it cannot fall. Keep hands, clothing, and tools clear of spokes, rotor, cassette, and tyre.
1. Watch the rim
Place a stationary visual pointer close to the rim—a zip tie on the fork or frame works—without touching it. Spin the wheel slowly.
Look for:
- lateral runout: the rim moves side to side;
- radial runout: the rim moves toward and away from the hub;
- a local dent, flat spot, crack, split seam, or bulge;
- brake-track or rotor interference;
- a spoke that is broken, visibly loose, or damaged.
Do not use the tyre sidewall as the pointer for rim trueness.
2. Watch the tyre seating line
Most tyres have a fine moulded line just above the rim. It should remain a consistent distance from the rim on both sides. Continental’s current maintenance guidance says the bead should look uniform all the way around and an uneven tyre should be deflated and reinstalled.
A section that disappears below the rim or rises noticeably may be mis-seated. Deflate before correcting it. Never exceed the lowest maximum pressure stated by the tyre, rim, tape, or bike maker in an attempt to force it into place.
3. Watch the casing and tread
With a steady rim and even bead line, watch the centre tread. A small cosmetic variation may not matter. A repeatable casing bulge, kink, side-to-side snake, exposed cord, cut, or delamination is different.
Deflate a suspect tyre and inspect it. Replace it or contact the manufacturer when casing damage remains possible. Do not ride a bulge to see whether it settles.
Check the wheel attachment and hub
Before interpreting any pointer:
- confirm the wheel matches the bike and is seated correctly;
- secure the quick-release or thru-axle using the maker’s procedure;
- hold the rim and gently push it side to side;
- feel for movement at the hub bearings, axle, or frame interface;
- spin slowly and listen for grinding.
Hub play can make the whole wheel shift without a truing problem. A loose axle can also change brake alignment and is a stop-riding fault.

Do not start by turning spoke nipples
Wheel truing balances spoke tension and rim position as a system. Tightening the spoke nearest a visible wobble can make radial and lateral trueness worse, create uneven tension, or damage the rim.
Leave the nipples alone when:
- a spoke is broken or completely loose;
- the rim is carbon, cracked, dented, or has impact damage;
- the wheel is new and under warranty;
- you lack the correct tension limits and tools;
- the apparent wobble is actually in the tyre or hub.
A spoke’s sound when plucked is only a comparison clue. Different sides of a rear or disc wheel often use different tensions, so equal musical pitch around the entire wheel is not the goal.
What about balancing weights?
Balancing may reduce stand shake on a safe, true wheel, but it is not a repair for poor tyre seating, rim runout, broken spokes, or hub play. Before adding any weight, ask whether a real riding symptom exists and whether the wheel maker permits adhesives or weights.
Do not attach an improvised object that could detach into a brake or frame. For most beginner road riding, resolving structural and seating faults matters far more than perfect static balance.
A careful low-speed confirmation
Only after the wheel, tyre, axle, spokes, hub, and brakes pass inspection, ride at walking pace in a traffic-free area. Stop if you feel oscillation, pulsing, rubbing, steering movement, or instability. Do not perform a high-speed descent as a diagnostic test.
If the bike feels normal and only a light stand shakes at high wheel speed, record a short video that shows the rim pointer and seating line. That evidence will help a shop decide whether anything needs service.

Hold the bike still and film the rim, bead line, and tread in one slow revolution. Check the axle, hub play, spokes, rim, and tyre before adjusting anything.
